what is resin ?

There are synthetic or natural organic compounds that (resin) of these materials have a higher viscosity. The natural type is transparent and they have capacity and have a color between yellow and brown. These substances are easily soluble in organic solvents such as ether, but insoluble in water.

What is unsaturated polyester resin ?

Unsaturated polyester resins are the third class of thermoset molding resins. They are oily or colorless. They are produced by the condensation of a diol with a mixture of saturated and unsaturated anhydrides. The condensation products (reactive resins) form highly durable structures and coatings when cross-linked with reactive vinyl monomers such as styrene.

Unsaturated polyester resin (more commonly called “polyester resin” or “fiberglass resin”) is a polymer. It is easy to use and with many applications, it is considered as the main part of many programs.

As this article briefly explains, polyester resin is used in many industries, from construction to aerospace. Offering incredible chemical and chemical properties, it is also relatively inexpensive compared to other resins such as epoxies and urethanes, offering very similar – if not superior – performance in several instances.

The term “polyester resin” largely refers to “unsaturated polyester resin” unless otherwise specified.

 

 

Applications of unsaturated polyester resin :

Unsaturated polyester resin is used in marine industries such as the production of kayaks, fishing boats, marine structures and ship paint, etc.
It is used in the production of composite sheets used in construction.
Corian and quartz are used in the production of artificial stones, which are the most widely used building stones.
It is used in sculpture industries and decorative products.
It can be used to produce FRP and GRP pipes and even drinking water piping.
Unsaturated polyester resin is used to produce car parts.
Unsaturated polyester resin can also be used in other industries, including button production, fiberglass products, wood varnish, etc.

Disadvantages :

Smells very much like styrene
Harder to mix than other resins including two part epoxies
Unsuitability for forming bonds with many surfaces
Weaker properties than epoxy resin

Accelerators :

Cobalt salts, including cobalt naphthenate and cobalt octoate, lead to the production of free radicals through initiators or catalysts at room temperature. Amines and especially aromatic amines have the same function as cobalt salts, but basically amines are used together with benzoyl peroxide paste.
