The difference between saturated and unsaturated polyester resin
polyester resin

What is polyester resin?

Polyester resins are the most widely used resin systems, especially in the marine industry. Most boats, pleasure boats and work boats built in composites use this resin system.

Polyester resins like these are of “unsaturated” type. Unsaturated polyester resin is a thermoset that can be cured from a liquid or solid state under appropriate conditions. Unsaturated polyester resins are usually referred to as “polyester resins” or simply “polyester”. A wide range of polyesters are made from different acids, glycols and monomers, all of which have different properties.

The difference between saturated and unsaturated polyester resin

Polyester resin is a saturated polymer that does not have any double or triple bonds; Therefore, there is no unsaturation in this polymer. On the other hand, unsaturated polyester resin is the most common type of resin and has double bonds in it; Therefore, it is unsaturated. This is the main difference between saturated and unsaturated polyester resin.

In addition, we can produce both by condensation reaction, but in the production of saturated polyester resins, the reaction between acids and glycols is carried out with an excess amount of glycol. While in the production of unsaturated polyester resin, the reaction between unsaturated dicarboxylic acids takes place. Looking at the differences further, saturated polyester resin is mainly used in the production of coil coatings while unsaturated polyester resin is useful in the production of sheet molding compound, bulk molding compound, netters and laser printers.

In summary, polyesters are important polymers. There are two types of polyester resin based on the chemical nature of the polymer. They are saturated and unsaturated forms of polyester resins. The main difference between saturated and unsaturated polyester resin is that saturated polyester resin does not have double bonds in its main chain, but unsaturated polyester resin has double bonds in its main chain.
